Why do so many people think Harvey Milk was the pioneer of the modern gay rights movement? he isn't?

He was a significant figure in the movement (which is still happening and is going to be around for a while). They are wrong in thinking that he was the sole pioneer, there have been many cataclysmic people and events in the movement for gay rights.
